Initiation by JD DeHart

Our hero has begun the journey,
has encountered the change

that creates fast-rolling conflict.

At some point, there will be a rescue
from another source, a reestablishment
of power

At some point, like Odysseus, the hero
may wander island to island on a journey
home or, like Beowulf, swim an incredible
distance and defeat a monster

or, like Batman, the hero will go through
a series of tests in another geography,
or like Superman, discover strength
in what originally gave sense of alienation

or, like Hester, discover that sin and flaw
can be a heroic burden or, like Ishmael,
stand on a fast-sinking ship of revenge.
