Perilous Journey by Gary Beck

A relic of a woman
wearing her daughter’s
old, red wool coat,
anxiously sits on the bus
uncertain of arrival,
needing constant reassurance
that it’s not her stop,
until she gets off,
goes to the library,
sits for five or six hours
looking at picture books of cats,
then makes the traumatic trip home,
parks in front of the tv,
mind completely shut down,
until the next morning
when she repeats her journey.
