Urban Expansion by Gary Beck

Soon half the world’s population
will live in towns and cities,
abandoning agriculture,
at least until World War III.
Natural increases
and migration of the rural poor
to towns and cities
swamp government services,
creating enormous slums
where people live in shanties
without water, sanitation, power,
unable to improve conditions.
The victims of neglect
pollute urban watersheds
with untreated sewage
and contribute to the rise
of crime and violence,
while denied opportunity
to escape from poverty.
